I work in administration in SETU. Can I access Moodle or is it only for lecturers?

All staff members at SETU have access to Moodle and can log in using their SETU username and password. Administration staff will have access to some generic support modules including the Academic Council Repository.

Several areas have been specially created in Moodle at the request of administrative staff. These areas contain past exam papers, school information and contact details, general news updates, messaging for class groups about cancellations, assignment deadlines and changes to timetables, etc. Users have been given access to these areas so that they can access the relevant information to their programme or department added by the administrative staff. Moodle support modules can be created to assist various administration functions.

Examples can be seen at the following links:

School of Science Student Information Area

Academic Council Information Area

Approved Course Schedules

If you would like to find out more about what Moodle can do to assist your department please contact a member of the support team at moodle@setu.ie or telephone us at 051-834114 or call to the helpdesk in Room FTG29 in the Flexible Teaching Building on the WIT Main Campus.

Who can access my class notes in Moodle?

Only students who are registered in the student registration system for that specific course module can access your module content in Moodle. A full list of students that have access to your module can be viewed by clicking on the Users link in the Administration block usually located on the lefthand side of the screen.

Lecturers can grant access to colleagues or additional students to their modules. However, your colleague or student must be able to log into Moodle (i.e. must be a registered student or WIT staff member) before they can be granted access to your module. You can view steps on how to enroll colleagues and/or staff on your module here.

If you or a colleague sends a request to the CTEL for access to a module in Moodle we have a procedure that we follow. We first check the Module area in Moodle to see if there is content, (this can be a single file or more) if there is content in place we email the current editing lecturer of the module informing them that a colleague (you will be CC'd on the email) has requested access and we need a confirmation email from the current lecturer before we will proceed. We will not proceed unless we get this confirmation email.

Do I need any special software to access/use Moodle?

In general, you do not need any special software to access Moodle. You will need internet access to use Moodle. The Firefox, IE10 and Google Chrome browsers tend to work best with Moodle.

Can students access Moodle outside the college campus?

Yes, all users can access Moodle from any location once they have internet access. Please note that students must first be registered to be able to access their notes in Moodle.

If you have a Moodle query or need technical support or advice, please send an email to moodle@setu.ie. We operate a helpdesk from Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

If you have a password issue, you will need to send an email to the computer services team at computerservices.wd@setu.ie.

If you have a registration issue, please contact the registration team at registration.wd@setu.ie.

How can I import parts of other modules into my module?

Lecturers can import resources between the modules they are assigned to within Moodle. For example, if you are reusing case studies for a new academic year, these can be copied from a previous year's module into the current one. It is important to note that to import between modules, you must be assigned as an editing lecturer on both modules.

Please watch this screencast below which will demonstrate how to import some or all of your content from one module to another.

How do I get a new module/course set up in Moodle?

Initially, you will be assigned to the modules in Moodle that you are timetabled on as of one week prior to the start of each semester.

After this date, the Moodle team will be individually updating a lecturer's allocation only when requested to do so.  On average a new module can be set up in Moodle within one working day of the request being received.

Please send an email to moodle@wit.ie to request editing rights to any module you need access to quoting the relevant CRN number.  If there are already lecturers assigned to the module in question and they have content in place, we will need to contact them to get permission to add you to this module.
