How do I restore my module backup?

This guide takes you through the process of restoring a previously backed up module you have made into a new module area in Moodle. Moodle backup files contain an archive of all content (files, gradebook, activities etc.) relating to the module they were created from.

A module restore from a backup file can be performed as follows:

Click the Restore option

From within the module you wish to restore, click on the 'More' menu item (situated in the secondary navigation, under the module title) and choose 'Course reuse' in the resulting drop-down menu.

You will be brought to a general purpose page from where you can perform a number of archival related tasks on your module

Choose which module backup to restore

Next, you will need to change the dropdown from 'Import' to 'Restore'.

This will reveal a file upload area. Locate the Moodle module backup (.mbz file) on your computer or OneDrive (may require you to login to Microsoft 365) and click 'Restore'.

Edit restore settings

There are now 5 steps to complete to restore your module; Confirm module settings, Choose destination, Restore settings, Confirm module schema, Review Settings

Each of these steps are detailed below, along with suggested settings for you to apply when restoring your course.

This section displays a manifest your modules content (activities, files, section titles etc.). You can simply review this information and proceed to the next step.

2. Choose destination

We recommend using 'Restore into this module' (see screenshot above) and the contents of your backup will be added to the current module. You also have the option of deleting the contents of the current module as part of the restoration process. We recommend only doing this if you are happy to remove any existing content from your module. Click 'Continue' to proceed to the next step.

To exclude an item, simply click on the check box next to the item and this item will no longer be restored into your module. Click 'Continue' to proceed to the next step.

5. Review Settings

Before performing a restore of the module backup, you will be given an oportunity to review the settings you have made in the previous sections of this process.
