Students with Accommodations

Background

If you have students with accommodations and you are planning to run an end-of-term assessment online for your module, these are some considerations you might want to take into account. If your assessment is online then the teaching and learning sub-committee of 'Academic Council' recommends a guideline of an extra 30 minutes for all students to allow for download, upload, scanning, WiFi, or any other technical unforeseen issues that might happen during the assessment. Students that are registered with Student Life and Learning are entitled to an extra 10 minutes per hour on top of the extra 30 minutes.

We also recommend that you share these practical tips on doing an online assessment with your student - link here.

Assignment

In the past, lecturers had to create two separate assignments to allow for a student with accommodations, but with the use of overrides you know only need one assignment in place, just create the assignment as normal then click into the assignment and click on the actions icon and you then have an option to apply a group (Groups must be created and populated in your module, the group process is a manual process) or you can apply an individual user override.

Quiz

The same applies to the Quiz activity. You will only need one quiz activity in place. Create the quiz with your normal settings. When you have the quiz in place from the main module screen, click into the quiz and click on the actions icon. You should see the option to apply the group or user override.

What the student sees

The student with the override will see they have extra time. The student who is not included in the override won't see who or which student has the override. They just see the normal time of the assessment.
