MCQ Procedure for Moodle Quiz

Introduction

With regard to Multiple Choice Quizzes in Moodle, this procedure describes the steps that Academic or administration staff may find useful when planning MCQ exams in Moodle either as part of the continuous assessment or final exams.

Procedure
The Lecturer should contact the CTEL team requesting support on the day of the exam (moodle@setu.ie). Normally, this request would be made a few weeks before the exam date. The Computer Services department should be notified as well for computer support.

Students with accommodations.
A student with accommodation should be registered with Student Life and Learning (SLL) these students are entitled to extra time in exams and are also entitled to have dedicated software installed on the computer (in a computer lab) to sit the exam, students are not permitted to use their own laptops in a computer lab on campus.

Requirements
The CTEL team will then arrange a meeting with the Lecturer to review the settings for the quiz on Moodle
During that meeting with the Lecturer, it would be worthwhile running through the following checklist, please feel free to make your own edits to this list.

Checklist
In consultation with the Lecturer, CTEL will check the various settings on the quiz, but not limited to the following;

  1. Timing - when the quiz opens and closes (allowing time for PC power up).
  2. Layout  - how many questions per page, its recommended to spread the questions out over multiple pages - don't have all questions on one page.
  3. Review options - normally turned off.
  4. Extra restrictions on attempts - Normally switch off, but could use a password for further attempts
  5. Common Module Settings - Depends if groups are in use, set to separate group if we have groups.
  6. Restrict access - for Repeats of 'Other', we could limit to certain student ID's or groupings.
  7. Question Bank - check the question bank for duplicate questions and that the correct questions are in use from the correct category, create a separate category for Trail Run.
  8. Content on Module - all other content in the rest of the sections on the module area should be hidden.
  9. Trial Run - it's a good idea to have the student do a trial run.
