What is Moodle?

What does ‘Moodle’ mean?

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.

Which username and password do I use to access Moodle?

Your Moodle username and password are the same as your computer login that you use to log on to computers in WIT.  All WIT staff and registered students can log into Moodle.

staff - Username = staff id, e.g. ahayes
students - Username = student number (without the W), e.g. 20001984.

Password - same as your WIT computer password, e.g. ABCEDKf6g

What is a firewall and why might it prevent me from accessing Moodle?

A firewall protects a computer, or computer network, from access by unauthorized parties.

If you are having problems accessing Moodle from home or work then it is possible that your firewall’s configuration is causing a problem. Please consult your antivirus documentation if at home, or your network administrator in your place of work.

How do I send an email to the students or participants on my module?

An email can be sent to all students/participants on a module. A valid email account is required when setting up student and staff accounts in Moodle. This defaults to the email provided at reigstration by students or the staff email account. The email message you send will go to the email account that they have provided.  If they are not sure which email address has been linked to their Moodle account they can check this in their profile area when they have logged into Moodle.

Can I view my timetable on Moodle?

Timetables are not available in Moodle. Student lecture timetables are available online at http://studentssp.wit.ie/Timetables/POSTT.aspx. Staff timetables are available at http://studentssp.wit.ie/Timetables/lecturerTT.aspx

What is a label and how do I use it in my module content?

A label serves as a spacer on a Moodle course page. It can be used to add text, images, multimedia or code in between other resources in the different sections. It is a very versatile resource and can help to improve the appearance of a course if used thoughtfully. Banners or descriptions may be added to labels to distinguish between and highlight different areas.
